Cary Shafer is a sculptor and stone carver whose work spans monumental public sculpture, civic monuments, architectural stone carving, and private commissions.

Shafer began his professional career in 1985 at Washington National Cathedral, where he carved gargoyles, angels, grotesques, and architectural ornament. That early experience established the foundation of a career centered on craftsmanship, proportion, structure, and the expressive possibilities of stone.

His public work includes large-scale projects such as Amaryllis, Megaflora, Metaform, Veterans Memorial Bridge, and Tilted Arch, as well as civic and architectural commissions in Indiana and beyond. His work combines traditional stone carving with steel, architectural elements, and contemporary forms.

Shafer has also completed historic restoration and architectural carving projects, including work associated with the White House and Washington National Cathedral.

Whether working on a monumental public sculpture or a finely detailed architectural element, his goal is to create work that is thoughtfully integrated into its setting and that remains meaningful over time.
